I taught high school English for 12 years, from 2002 to 2014. Since then I've been an English tutor. I enjoy the one-on-one interaction and the opportunity to give students the attention they need on specific skills and learning targets.

Hobbies

I enjoy stories, individuality, and investing in the next generation. These are the key interests that keep me in teaching/tutoring among high school students. I enjoy seeing students gain an increased understanding and confidence in their own gifts and capacities as they become young adults. While I've come to love reading and writing, as a high school student I didn't at all. It wasn't until my years as an upperclassman in college that I gained an affinity for this world of words. This helps me relate to both the eager as well as the reluctant English student. In addition, I enjoy travel, and have had the opportunity to tour the globe internationally with groups of friends. Western Europe is a favorite destination, but I treasure the time I've gotten to spend in China, India, Vietnam, Singapore, Malaysia, Zambia, and Haiti. Time with family also falls near the top of the list in terms of my interests. I grew up in Iowa and enjoy returning there, especially during the summer, for time with a number of family members. I'm the "baby" of four girls, and today refer to my sisters as my best friends. Some of my family members also live in Michigan and Illinois, so my home in Chicago (during the school year) situates me in a good place to visit all of them throughout the year. Lastly, I should mention my interest in food. I guess that makes me a "foodie". The interest began with the high standards my mom set as a fabulous chef and homemaker. Living and Chicagoland and access to the Cooking Channel has only fueled the interest in more recent years. I tend to prefer pretty healthy fare, and at the same time, I love the challenge of working with yeast and have been known to come up with a pretty mean cinnamon roll. With cream cheese frosting, of course.
