Robert K.
Private tutor in Cedar Falls, IA
Education
I am a senior at the University of Northern Iowa and my major is Political Science. I have a 3.00 GPA.
Experience
I have tutored once before; I tutored for a course called "Computer Applications" while I was a student at Northeast Iowa Community College in Peosta, Iowa. I helped the students in the class with questions about Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Access, although I'm no longer familiar with MS Access. I didn't take the SAT - it wasn't even offered when I was in high school. My performance on the ACT, however, was pretty good. My composite score was 27. English: 24 (although I would hardly say that's an accurate reflection of my skills now), Mathematics: 30, Reading: 24, and Science & Reasoning: 28. I would like to be a tutor because I've recently begun tossing around the idea of becoming a high school social studies/government teacher and I'd like to get a feel for how I might perform. I'm not sure if any of my classes (aside from the Computer Applications course I tutored at NICC) are relevant in elaborating my potential ability as a tutor, but I do think that my education in the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences has enabled me to develop an excellent understanding of the social sciences and western history. More importantly, I believe my education has helped me develop crucial critical-thinking skills that other students, for example, those studying business or communication, wouldn't have develop or develop as thoroughly. I haven't taken a math course in 4 years, but lower level (grade school & high school...up to about Pre-Calc) mathematics is something that has always come naturally. Finally, I added ADD/ADHD to my list of subjects because I was diagnosed ADD in the 5th grade and I know how difficult it can be for a young student to learn when s/he struggles with a learning disorder. I was fortunate to receive appropriate treatment and special attention that has allowed me to deal with my ADD. I would be remiss if I passed on an opportunity to help young people who need a little extra help and to whom I could relate.
