Hi! My name is Nick. I am a senior science education major at the University of Northern Iowa. I have been a tutor for roughly 5 years. Throughout that time, I have tutored anywhere from middle school math to college level chemistry. I currently work as a science tutor in the Academic Learning Center at the University of Northern Iowa, and have had that job for about 2 years. While working for the ALC, I have logged over 300 hours of one-on-one tutoring with students for a wide variety of college science and math classes. I also participate in weekly training and feedback sessions geared towards improving my tutoring practices. During my tutoring sessions, I act as a facilitator to the students' learning. I believe it is important to run a student driven tutoring session, and accomplish their goals. I want to help students learn study skills along with the content of a subject. My goal is to improve students' study strategies, so that they can take to their future science and math courses. I will often redirect questions to students to get them thinking about the concepts at hand. This process may take some additional time when working through a problem, but the retention rate is significantly improved. Teaching, tutoring, and working with students is my passion. I really enjoy watching students develop academically and become more confident in themselves. Every student is different. Getting to know a student and connecting with them is a fun and essential process in effective tutoring.
